The successful completion of the grand construction project on the grounds of the former Spartakiáda stadium in Olomouc has been nominated for the 2010 Building of the Year award.

During the gala nominating evening for the 2010 Building of the Year award held on Thursday, 9 September 2010 at Dům ABF in Prague a total of 15 buildings were announced as this year’s nominees. One recipient of these prestigious nominations was the large-scale development project near the centre of Olomouc to transform the abandoned Spartakiáda sports grounds into a modern recreational facility, including a luxury design congress hotel.

The implementation of this project with high demands for integration into the public space was divided into four phases. The first phase included an urban planning study of the site, the opening of the banks around the old stadium and the relocation of the training grounds used by the Sigma Olomouc football club. The second phase of the project saw the construction of a tree-lined town street, sidewalks and parking spaces; a new children’s traffic playground was also built. The third phase of the development project involved the completion and opening of the modern Omega Sports and Health Centre in September 2008. The gala opening of the four-star NH Olomouc Congress in June 2010 was the culmination of the multi-year transformation of the former Spartakiáda stadium into a multipurpose facility. The project returned life to an area of more than eight hectares, creating a zone for meetings, recreational and top class competitive sports, free-time activities and congress tourism with premium accommodations. The project also proved to be a successful collaboration between the public and private sectors, and the modern architecture has significantly expanded the offer of services for Olomouc citizens and visitors to the city.
